Asheville, N.C., March 20, 2020 – Dear YMCA Community,

We’re all in this together. And in times like this, community is more important than ever.

I know you’d prefer to be here with us, working out, attending a group exercise class, or having your children surrounded by their friends, playing, learning and growing in our youth sports or afterschool programs.

It’s uncertain when we will be able to open again, but we’re working hard behind the scenes to continue to serve you. It is our strong intention to resume all normal operations as soon as possible.

Until then, we’re still here for you. The Y has a long history of stepping up in times of crisis. It’s no different now. For example, we are…

• providing free emergency childcare for first responders, frontline healthcare workers, teachers, and other essential personnel

feeding thousands of children and families with prepackaged produce bags at mobile markets and curbside to-go dinners at elementary schools

• conducting virtual community health sessions and doing phone check-ins for seniors and people with diabetes and other chronic conditions

offering free online workouts and group exercise classes and livestreaming workouts with our Y staff to help you stay healthy and connected during this time of isolation

• working tirelessly on solutions to support our staff, including more than 700 part-timers who are now without work and more than 100 full-time staff who are taking reduced hours or a substantial pay cut

I ask you to please consider what you should be doing during this time for your personal health and well-being, and to think about what the Y means to you.

As a nonprofit, the Y relies solely on operations and donors for support. Remaining a member while we are closed and giving to our Community Emergency Response Fund will help us meet the urgent needs of the present and ensure we can come back strong when the coronavirus threat has passed and the community needs us more than ever.

I realize not everyone may be in position to do that, and I understand. If you have questions or need assistance with your membership, please complete this change request.

Our focus on serving you and our community has not wavered in these unsteady times. Thank you for your partnership, support, and trust, and for staying with us, the way we plan to stay with you.

Be safe and well,

Paul Vest
