As families head back to school, the Y helps fill a growing childcare gap

As backpacks are packed and school buses begin rolling across western North Carolina, August's National Back to School Month serves as an important reminder that the school day doesn't end when the final bell rings.

For thousands of working families, one of the biggest back-to-school challenges isn't buying school supplies—it's finding safe, reliable, and affordable care between the end of the school day and the end of the workday.

The YMCA of Western North Carolina is helping bridge that gap through its comprehensive afterschool childcare programs in many local public schools. The Y offers flexible options ranging from drop-in care to full-year programs that include school breaks and summer camp, making it easier for families to find a solution that fits their schedules and budgets. Financial assistance is also available to ensure every child has access to quality care.

"Parents shouldn't have to choose between their careers and knowing their children are in a safe, enriching environment after school," said Melissa Wiedeman, senior vice president of community services at the YMCA of Western North Carolina. "At the Y, our afterschool programs do much more than provide supervision. We create opportunities for children to learn, build confidence, stay active, make friends, and discover new interests while giving working families the support they need."

The need for quality childcare continues to grow as communities across North Carolina face what many experts have called the "childcare cliff." During the COVID-19 pandemic, many childcare providers remained open thanks to temporary federal stabilization funding. As funding has expired, providers across the country have faced rising operating costs, staffing shortages, classroom closures, and difficult decisions about reducing capacity or increasing tuition. These challenges have left many families with fewer affordable childcare options and longer waiting lists.

The Y has long been committed to meeting this need by offering high-quality, licensed childcare that extends learning beyond the classroom. Programs follow the YMCA of the USA School-Age Care Curriculum Framework and include homework support, outdoor play, STEM activities, arts and crafts, sports, healthy snacks, character development, and opportunities for children to build meaningful friendships in a safe, welcoming environment.

The Y serves students from Asheville City Schools, Buncombe County Schools, and McDowell County Schools through a variety of afterschool program options designed to meet the diverse needs of today's families. Programs operate until 6 p.m. on school days and provide care during many teacher workdays, school breaks, and snow days, depending on the enrollment option selected.
