June News: Kids Can Bounce Back with Sports and More

Welcome and welcome back!

Hello to everyone who joined the Y family in May and welcome back to our returning members! We have lots of exciting updates and highlights to share with you this month. Keep reading to learn more about how to connect with community through the Y this summer.

Kids can bounce back with sports and more

The Y is the place for kids and teens to stay active and have fun this summer!

  • Our half-day sports camps for basketball, field hockey, flag football, soccer, and volleyball are designed to help kids ages 5-12 build skills and confidence in and out of the game.
  • Children ages 3-5 will enjoy Camp Kiddos, a half-day enrichment program that introduces structured camp through arts, crafts, song, outdoor play, water safety, and fun educational activities.
  • Check out fitness classes for kids and teens on our group exercise schedule.
  • Youth ages 13+ may have their own membership and can be in the facility without a guardian. The Wellness Center is accessible for ages 13-15 after they've completed a Youth and Family Orientation.

Community supports lifesaving water skills for kids

Safety Around Water (SAW) is back for the summer! This program teaches children of all ages and from all backgrounds that water should be fun, not feared, as long as you know how to stay safe in the water.

SAW teaches kids what to do if they find themselves in the water unexpectedly. They learn fundamental safety skills, including what to look for in a safe place to swim, how to swim a short distance on their front, how to roll over onto their back to rest, and then roll on their front to continue swimming to safety.

This program is completely free for youth, thanks to the support from generous community donors. Registration is now open for upcoming SAW classes at Patton Pool in Hendersonville. Our Reuter Family Y will play host this summer to Carolina Day School Horizons students to teach them how to stay safe around water. Stay tuned for more opportunities to partner with the Y and Safety Around Water.

Donations feed neighbors and build community

Each week, the Y's nutrition team is in the community distributing healthy produce, simple recipes, and valuable nutrition information that's easy to understand. This service is FREE and open to the public, no questions asked. Find our mobile market schedules here

Our annual fundraising campaign supports hunger relief, water safety classes, access to childcare, LIVESTRONG at the Y cancer support, and much more, including scholarships for membership and overnight camp.

You can now donate directly to your home center. Just visit our locations page, find the Y of your choice, and click on the "Give" link.

Financial assistance is made possible by generous community donations. Donate today to keep the Y accessible for all.

Working with the Y changes lives – including your own! Here are a few of the positions we're hiring for now:

YMCA Camp Watia Counselors and Lifeguards

Working at an overnight summer camp offers more than just a paycheck and an awesome Chaco tan line. It's an opportunity to cultivate lifelong skills while preparing for college or your future career. Working at Camp Watia is also a blast -- you'll make new friends, have fun playing and teaching, and serve as a role model for future leaders. We're now hiring motivated people age 18 and up.

Lifeguards and Swim Instructors

Relieve stress with 21 days of self-care

new report from the American Psychological Association finds that Americans are, not surprisingly, more stressed than ever before.

Prolonged stress has a serious impact on mental and physical health. The good news is that you can take steps to reverse the negative effects of stress, and the Y is here to help.

Our latest mobile app challenge encourages you to nourish your spirit, mind, and body by setting aside 15 minutes each day for 21 days to practice yoga, mindfulness, or meditation.

Fifteen minutes of yoga a day will help you build a healthy habit that makes your body and mind stronger and more resilient, and can improve chronic conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or heart disease.

Click the Challenges tile in our app to sign up for 21 days of relaxation in June.

This month we've supplemented our excellent local content with new videos from Ys around the country. Check out members-only child and family activities, dance classes, senior fitness, and more on the Virtual Y.

We take Pride in welcoming all

June is National LGBTQ+ Pride Month. At the YMCA of Western North Carolina, we believe that a diverse world makes all of us stronger. When our doors are open to all, everyone has the opportunity to learn, grow, and thrive.

Make the most of your membership

In addition to online classes, program discounts, and drop-in childcare, Y membership includes lots of great benefits, such as:
