Starting and maintaining a consistent exercise routine can be challenging and intimidating. Many factors influence whether someone achieves their fitness goals or never steps foot in the gym. This is where group fitness comes in—it’s much more than just movement; it’s about connection, belonging, support, and yes, a little fun.

As humans, we are social beings who thrive in groups, and this certainly applies to fitness too. Group exercise classes bring people together from different backgrounds with one shared purpose, reinforcing consistency and commitment. Having taught for 20 years, I can attest to the inspiring bonds created in these classes, often resulting in lifelong friendships. Participants are more likely to stick with their routines because they feel connected to the instructor and fellow participants. Belonging is crucial here; it is one of the most powerful motivators in both fitness and life. When people feel like they belong in a space, they show up for their people because of how it makes them feel.

Fitness isn’t just about how you move—it’s about how you feel and connect. Group exercise creates a space where you feel seen and motivated to keep showing up. It’s not just a workout; it’s a community that pushes you to leverage your inner strengths and engage with a support system that transforms challenges into opportunities for growth. When you’re surrounded by people equally committed to their wellness journey, every class becomes a touchpoint for building consistency, fostering accountability, and nurturing new, healthy habits. In our fast-paced world, finding a group that shares your values and drive can be the key to enhancing your physical fitness, mental health, and overall well-being.

If consistency has been a struggle, it might be time to rethink your approach. Imagine a workout where every rep and every smile adds up to a win for your health. It’s not just about counting calories or minutes; it’s about the amazing connection you build with your crew. Join a class, soak up the energy, and feel the power of belonging. Your journey to feeling fabulous is just one class away—and we’re all here to cheer you on every step of the way.

Leanne, a Y member, shares her experience: “I feel so glad I found a class that suited my preferences and I enjoy it so much! Honestly, it has been the first exercise class that ‘stuck’ so well that I made it a long-term priority and I haven’t gotten tired of it yet! And when I was able to convince a friend to come with me, she’s become an even better friend since I am now seeing her consistently twice a week, every week. Even in our busy schedules, we’ve made time for it and gotten to know other regulars in the class too. I’m devoted to the class not only because it makes my body feel good and strong and cared for, but because it helps me as a person feel cared for too!”

Rachel V. echoes this sentiment: “I’ve always struggled to maintain a consistent workout routine on my own. It wasn't until I joined a group fitness class at the Y that I learned the secret sauce—community. This particular class has a great group of regulars, and as we've come to know each other, it has elevated exercise from something I need to do to something I want to do. When you bake friendship into fitness, it takes on a whole other priority level. Plus, it's super fun!”

Kay, another Y member, adds: “I joined the Y 2 years ago after moving to the area. I started attending Pilates and Booty Barre classes to stay in shape and help rehab a recent back problem. I ended up making a great group of friends along the way. We all support each other in our classes and in our everyday lives! We have a great time together.”

If consistency has been a struggle, maybe it’s not about trying harder—it’s about finding the right modality and the right people. I invite you to step into a class or two, feel the energy, and see for yourself: when you find your people, you will feel and find your strength.
