The Diabetes Empowerment and Education Program (DEEP™) is a 10-week diabetes self-management program to help people living with type 2 diabetes thrive.
In a small supportive group setting, we provide information and support that encourages you to self-manage your chronic condition and reduce your risk of complications.
You’ll learn how to:
- Eat a healthy, balanced diet
- Increase physical activity
- Understand how diabetes affects the body
- Lose weight and understand medication interventions
Why this program?
The primary goal of DEEP is to improve the quality of life for people living with type 2 diabetes. Its multicultural, bilingual education curriculum has been shown to be successful in helping participants take control of their diabetes and reduce their risk of complications.
DEEP was developed by the University of Illinois-Chicago for low-income, multicultural populations, especially Latino/Hispanic, African American/Black, Asian American and non-Hispanic white members of the community. The program has more than 5,000 educators and trainers and has been implemented around the world.
How it works
Two trained facilitators lead eight sessions over 10 weeks. Each session is approximately two hours. Participatory and empowerment adult education methods offer participants the necessary skills and knowledge for an improved quality of life.
Criteria to participate
To qualify for DEEP, participants must be at least 18 years old and have a diagnosis of type 2 diabetes.
