The Diabetes Prevention Program at the Y helps those at risk of developing type 2 diabetes.

In a small supportive group setting, we provide support and assistance with adopting and maintaining healthy lifestyles.

We provide tools and strategies that encourage participants to:

  • Eat healthier
  • Increase physical activity
  • Lose weight, and most importantly,
  • Reduce the risk for type 2 diabetes for the short term and long term future

Does this program actually work?

Our Diabetes Prevention Program was robustly researched by the National Institutes of Health.

The results of their study showed that among participants with prediabetes, this program reduced the number of new cases of type 2 diabetes by as much as 58% among participants overall and 71%, among adults age 60 years or older.

How it works

The Diabetes Prevention Program is a 12-month, group-based program consisting of 16 one-hour, weekly sessions. It's followed by monthly sessions led by a trained lifestyle coach who facilitates a small group of people with similar goals.

Discussion topics include healthy eating, increasing physical activity, reducing stress, problem solving, and much more.

Participants stay motivated to maintain progress towards program goals with monthly maintenance sessions.

Program goals and health benefits

Participants in the program have two goals:

  1. Lose 7% of your body weight
  2. Gradually increase your physical activity to 150 minutes per week

You'll do this by learning strategies for:

  • Healthy eating: Eating smaller portions, reducing fat in your diet, and discovering healthier food options has been proven to help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes.
  • Increasing physical activity: Studies have repeatedly shown that moderate physical activity (walking, swimming, mowing the lawn) for as little as 30 minutes, five days a week can help improve your blood pressure, raise your good cholesterol, and prevent blood flow problems.
  • Losing weight: It has been shown that reducing your body weight by even a small amount (as little as 7%) can offer tremendous benefits for people at risk for diabetes.

Criteria for participation

To qualify for the Diabetes Prevention Program at the Y, participants must be at least 18 years old, overweight (BMI>25; Asian adults, BMI>22) and at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes, or have been diagnosed with prediabetes.
