The Y is dedicated to improving the overall health of the community. Our Community Health team takes several approaches to improving health outcomes for people with chronic conditions or diseases. Our team of lifestyle coaches and certified health coaches will work with you and your support network to better manage your conditions and improve your health.
Cancer Support
LIVESTRONG at the YMCA focuses on the whole person, not the disease. This research-based, 12-week exercise-based program offers survivors a supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person. Participants work toward improved muscular strength, cardiovascular endurance and flexibility, all within a caring community of health seekers. The program is offered at no-cost to participants and includes a household membership to the Y for the session’s duration. You do not have to be a Y-member to join LIVESTRONG.
Diabetes Prevention and Management
Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) at the Y
This 12-month, supportive, virtual/classroom-based program focuses on the skills needed to move away from the type 2 diabetes border. Key program components include support for weight loss via healthy eating strategies, increased physical activity, tolls to overcome barriers and manage stress. Through funding provided by NC State University, the Office of Minority Health and Health Disparities and the WNC Bridge Foundation serving McDowell County, this program is currently offered at no-cost. English and Spanish classes; focused classes for minority groups.
Health Coaching
Health Coaching is the use of evidence-based skillful conversation, client-focused interventions and strategies to actively and safely engage participants in health behavior change. Health coaching is especially beneficial to those who feel "stuck" or are having a hard time reaching their goals, changing lifestyle habits or simply need that extra support and accountability. Fee-based programs provide one-on-one sessions both in-person or virtual; one-time fresh-start package available. All sessions are offered in 30 or 60 minute intervals in English or Spanish.

Nutrition
Reaching and maintaining a healthier weight is important for everyone's overall health and well-being. People who are significantly overweight have a greater risk of developing many diseases, including high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, stroke, and some forms of cancer. For obese adults, even losing a few pounds or preventing further weight gain has health benefits. At the Y, we’re here to support your wellness journey so you can get to a healthier weight.
The YMCA of WNC also brings free, healthy, and nutritious meals to the community year-round with mobile food distributions and cooking demonstrations. Learn more about our nutrition outreach.
