YMCA Responds to Governor's Next Steps
On July 14 Gov. Roy Cooper announced recommendations for restarting school with a mix of in-person and remote learning. Like parents and school administrators, the Y has been navigating uncharted territory as we develop plans to provide flexible and affordable childcare while expanding enrichment and providing extended learning opportunities for children. We know families are eager to know what’s coming for the school year, and we’re working diligently with our local schools and community partners to adapt and finalize options for students’ out-of-school time. We will post our plans on on our website as soon as they are available.
Gov. Cooper also announced that our state will remain in Safer at Home Phase 2 through Aug. 7. While our indoor fitness centers remain closed for now, we’ve resumed many of our members’ favorite activities while following all federal, state, and local health guidelines. Our pools are open, group exercise instructors are offering outdoor fitness and exercise classes (in addition to the virtual classes still available online), and day campers continue to enjoy safe summer fun. Please see our Reopening Guide for more information.
All YMCA programs are following stringent health and safety precautions to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. We’re prepared to operate safely and responsibly as soon as we receive the go-ahead to resume indoor fitness.
The pandemic has presented more opportunities than ever for us to meet urgent needs for childcare, healthy meals, social connections, virtual fitness, and online chronic care management. As a nonprofit community benefit organization, we depend on our members and donors to fund this work, help us meet financial obligations, and retain as many staff as possible. We deeply appreciate your patience and support in these trying times. Thank you for staying with us as we fight for our survival.
The support goes both ways. The community is hurting, and the Y is here for you. If you need assistance with your account, free produce or meals, online workouts, or supportive conversation, please see our website, email us or call 828-251-5910. Thank you for staying with us so we can stay with you.
