YMCA Lifts Mask Requirement for Vaccinated People
Asheville, N.C., May 14, 2021 – Effective immediately, fully vaccinated people are no longer required to wear masks or physically distance in YMCA of Western North Carolina fitness facilities.
This decision is based on Gov. Roy Cooper’s announcement earlier today that he has lifted most of the state’s mandatory mask requirements for fully vaccinated people, as well as restrictions on social distancing, capacity limits, and mass gatherings.
The Y will continue to require masks and physical distancing indoors for staff and participants in childcare settings, including YMCA youth development centers, afterschool sites, day camps, and overnight camp.
Health screenings are no longer required for adults in centers. The Y will continue to check temperatures in childcare settings.
Partially vaccinated and unvaccinated people are asked to wear a mask and keep their distance at the Y to protect themselves and others.
“The Y has been diligent about following all public health guidance to keep the community safe during the pandemic, and as a result we have had no COVID-19 outbreaks associated with our facilities or programs,” said Paul Vest, president and CEO of the YMCA of WNC. “As we enter this next phase, we trust our staff and members to continue following the Y’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility to protect themselves and others.”
The Y strongly encourages all members of the public to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Please consult your healthcare provider and the CDC for more information about vaccines, masks, and other COVID-19 protective measures. Go to https://myspot.nc.gov/ to find a vaccination site near you.
