YMCA Camp Watia Closed for Summer 2020 Due to Covid-19

A Letter from our Executive Director

Dear Camp Watia Community,

YMCA Camp Watia began with a vision of an overnight camp for all children, no matter their life circumstances. Since 2016, when the first campers played Capture the Flag, laughed with their friends, and flew down the giant water slide, our camp community has lived up to that vision, and more.

It is with a heavy heart that I write to let you know we have made the difficult decision to cancel all in-person overnight camp sessions for 2020.

All of us had high hopes for this summer, as we planned to celebrate our fifth year. However, no one could have predicted the shocking changes brought on by the global coronavirus pandemic. It breaks my heart that we won’t be together around the campfire this year.

Camp leadership did not make this decision without careful deliberation and soul-searching. We consulted health experts and considered every possible option for running camp in a way that would maintain government-mandated health and safety requirements while also giving children the best possible overnight camp experience. In the end, we were forced to conclude that it would not be possible to maintain adequate social distancing, exceptional program quality, and proper staffing levels.

We know this is very disappointing news, but our highest priority is the well-being of our campers, families, and community. Our staff team is hard at work developing new ways to engage with and provide alternative programming for our campers and families. We are committed to bringing camp to you in the best way we can under the circumstances.

As we shared before, we are able to offer your family three financial options for the camp fees you have paid: donation, rollover to 2021, or refund. You may combine these options to best suit your needs.

We will send a follow up email on Monday (5/18) with more details and instructions on how to submit your family’s choices. We ask that you wait to submit your choices until then.

I’m truly sorry we are not able to serve our campers this summer. This is an extraordinarily challenging time, but we are Watia. I know we will all emerge stronger than before, and we will be together around the campfire again someday soon.

Until then, the camp office remains open if you have any questions. You can reach us at 828-209-9600 or by email at ymcacampwatia@ymcawnc.org.

Stay well,

Ryan Hove
