Kids have been having fun learning how to play basketball at the Y since 1891. Our youth basketball leagues are a great way for kids to fine-tune their skills, practice good sportsmanship, and build teamwork. Kids in YMCA youth sports leagues learn about dribbling, shooting, and guarding.
Youth sports teams spend time on skill development during practice. Games are played once a week. Each player receives a jersey, and children must have sneakers with non-marking soles to play inside all YMCA gyms.

The YMCA of Western North Carolina Family encourages parents to be involved and become part of the Y community through supporting their children at practices and games. Parents and friends can also be helpful as volunteer coaches, officials and timekeepers. Please contact your sports director or coordinator if you would like more information on how to get involved and support the league.
Games and practices may be canceled due to inclement weather. Each center maintains a Sports League Weather Hotline to help families get the most up-to-date information about cancellations. All games or practices will be canceled at least one hour before the event and the Hotline will be updated at that time.
If there is a sudden weather event, cancellation will be an on-location decision and the Hotline will be updated immediately. These hotlines will have one of three messages:
- All events are on as scheduled
- All events have been canceled
- When a decision will be made
