Programs for Active Older Adults
At the Y, active older adult members age 50 and up experience a strong sense of belonging and a network of friends who provide support for sustained health and well-being. Through fun, safe and engaging programs, activities and events, members increase their self-confidence and sense of achievement while building relationships and celebrating the success and milestones of others.

Yoga for Osteoporosis Certification with Loren Fishman, MD, B.Phil., (oxon.)
Peer-reviewed research shows that yoga can help build bone density and reverse osteopenia and osteoporosis. Given the increasing aging population, teachers need solid, evidence-based training in order to effectively serve older adults. Graduates of this 40-hour training will be certified to teach Dr. Fishman's Method. You will learn how to prepare new students to practice safely, and how to adapt the 12 poses for any level of student. The training will include 20 hours of pre-requisite on-line material covering the science and yoga practices involved, plus 20 hours of in-person instruction in how to teach the poses.

LIVESTRONG at the YMCA is a physical activity and well-being program that helps adult cancer survivors achieve their holistic health goals. The research-based program offers people affected by cancer a supportive environment to participate in physical and social activities focused on strengthening the whole person.
Diabetes Prevention and Management
The Y offers two evidence-based programs to help people prevent and manage type 2 diabetes:
Falls are the leading cause of both fatal and nonfatal injury in people over age 60. The Y offers two evidence-based courses to help people reduce risk while increasing strength and balance:
- Moving for Better Balance uses the principles and movements of Tai Chi to help older adults increase their strength, improve their balance, and increase their confidence in doing everyday activities.
- A Matter of Balance is a free eight-week structured group intervention that emphasizes practical strategies to reduce fear of falling and increase activity levels.

Our centers offer a variety of opportunities for physical fun and social interaction, including:

Senior Fitness and Arthritis Management
The Y's Enhance®Fitness is a proven community-based senior fitness and arthritis management program geared toward older adults and those with a chronic condition, such as arthritis. It helps older adults become more active, energized and empowered for independent living. Regular participation reduces age-related functional decline and has been shown to reduce the incidence of disability in older adults who suffer from arthritis.
