Buncombe County Mask Policy

The YMCA of Western North Carolina is dedicated to the safety and health of our members, our staff and our entire community. Since the onset of COVID-19 in our community, our Y has continually adapted programming and protocols to go above and beyond in keeping you safe.

On Aug. 18, 2021, Buncombe County put an indoor mask policy into effect. We are currently requesting more guidance from the county regarding masks for pool areas, steam/saunas, and strenuous exercise, as previous state Executive Orders did.

Once we have clarity on how this mandate applies to our member-based facility, we will share that information and implementation plan with our members. In the meantime:

  • Masks are required in common areas open to the public in Buncombe County YMCA facilities.
  • All staff in Buncombe, Henderson, and McDowell County facilities are still required to wear masks indoors, regardless of vaccination status. The only exceptions are rescue-ready lifeguards and group exercise instructors, who have been provided with face shields to wear during class. As an alternative, transparent barriers are also available for instructors to use in some centers.

Everyone should feel safe and welcome at the Y. We encourage you to choose the exercise option that's right for you, from indoor workouts to outdoor exercise to online classes. Your membership includes full access to Virtual YMCA, which has hundreds of classes you can take at home or on the road.

We encourage all YMCA members, participants, and guests to wear a mask indoors if they feel more comfortable doing so.

Thank you for joining us in keeping the community safe. Most of all, thank you for staying with us and being a part of the YMCA.
